How to declutter - simple steps to guide you.

Writer: Carina PopeCarina Pope

Do you often look around your home and feel the need to declutter but just don't know where or how to start?

My simple step by step guide is here to help.

Decluttering often feels like an extremely overwhelming task & because of that you put it off.... right?

Not anymore! These simple steps will get you started & keep you going right til the very end of your project.

STEP 1. Make sure you have everything you need before you start. Black bags or boxes for donations, items to be sold, recycling & rubbish, sticky labels so you can keep track of donations etc & a pen, as well as a cleaning cloth & spray. It's also a great opportunity to listen to some music or pop on your favourite podcast.

STEP 2. My top tip & the way I work with my clients is to start decluttering from the door working in a clockwise direction. It's really important to look at EVERY single box, bag or item as you go and decide if its staying or if it's time to let it go, its also perfectly acceptable to create a 'Maybe" pile & re-visit at the end.

Don't step over something or push it to one side to deal with later, this way when you look back you'll see real progress & gain motivation instead of more stuff to deal with & feelings of discouragement.

STEP 3. Using your black bags or boxes direct your decluttered items into the relevant one, donations, selling, recycling or rubbish..... make sure you've labelled your bags/boxes! Once you've filled a bag or box remove from the room to free up space.

*************TOP TIP************

***To avoid distraction, if you find items that don't belong in the space you are working in just pop them into a holding area & put them back to where they do belong at the end of your decluttering session, this stops you from wandering off to other rooms around your home & loosing focus on the job in hand***

STEP 4. Now you've decluttered its time to clean & organise! (my favourite bit!)

Wipe down any surfaces, run the hoover around & remove any soft furnishings that may need a wash. Organise all of the "keep" items in an accessible, tidy fashion.

STEP 5. Once you've decluttered remove all or as much of the donations/recycling/rubbish as you can, getting things gone the same day leaves a true feeling of a clear space & accomplishment of your hard work. Deliver to your local charity shop or arrange a doorstep collection, visit your local household recycling centre & advertise your items to sell.

Now sit back & enjoy your beautifully clutter free space!
