Toys Toys Toys! (and how to keep them organised)

Writer: Carina PopeCarina Pope

If you have children you'll know that they come with a LOT of 'stuff' including many toys.

Trying to create that balance of accessibility for the children to play freely AND store the toys in an organised, tidy manner can sometimes be tricky & cause overwhelm.

I wanted to share some of my top tips to help you keep on top of your children's toys, games & books & to encourage your children to help when it comes to tidying up.

First declutter! That's almost always the first step, then organise using storage systems that work for your family & your home.

IKEA offer a fantastic selection of versatile storage.

Use the 1 in 1 out rule to avoid clutter building, when your child would like a new toy encourage them to part with one of their older preloved toys, maybe donating to a charity shop or selling for some pocket money.

Use labels on all toy storage, depending on the child's age the labels can use words or pictures. This makes tidying up much easier when things are clearly labelled, especially for the children.

Children will always respond to positive praise, lots of encouragement & incentives, I advise to stay away from incentives that involve buying more though as this defeats the object.

Movie night is a great incentive, let the children choose the film & the snacks or maybe they would like to choose the destination for a day out or their favourite tea. There are so many ways of rewarding children for their willingness to help tidy up & keep their toys organised AND they are learning valuable life skills.
